Why September is the Best Time to Visit the Serengeti

Wondering when to plan your Serengeti safari? September stands out as one of the best months to visit this iconic African destination. From catching the tail end of the Great Migration to enjoying the perfect safari weather, here’s your complete guide to why September is the optimal time to explore the Serengeti.

Why September is the Best Time to Visit the Serengeti

If you’re planning a safari adventure, there’s one iconic destination that likely stands out—the Serengeti. And when it comes to timing, September is a golden month to explore this wild African landscape. From witnessing the awe-inspiring Great Migration to enjoying pleasant weather and fewer tourists, September is an unbeatable time to experience the Serengeti at its finest. In this guide, we’ll dive into the key reasons why this month is the ultimate time to visit and what you can expect during your trip.

1. Witness the Thrilling Wildebeest Migration Crossings

Perhaps the biggest draw of the Serengeti is the Great Migration, and September is a particularly exciting time for this natural phenomenon. Around 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, undertake their annual migration across the Serengeti and into the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

In September, the Mara River crossings are in full swing, offering one of the most dramatic and heart-pounding wildlife spectacles on Earth. The wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles brave the dangerous waters, where lurking crocodiles await their next meal. On the riverbanks, predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas stalk the herds, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience for safari-goers.

If you’re after a thrilling, high-stakes encounter with nature, September’s Mara River crossings are an event you don’t want to miss.

2. Perfect Safari Weather

September’s weather in the Serengeti is about as good as it gets. As part of the dry season, the climate is ideal for long days of game viewing. Daytime temperatures hover around 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), making it comfortable to explore without worrying about heat exhaustion or heavy rains.

Additionally, the dry season brings thinner vegetation, which means better visibility for spotting wildlife. Animals also tend to gather around watering holes and rivers, making it easier to locate large herds and the predators that follow them.

The cool mornings and evenings provide the perfect atmosphere for sunrise game drives and evening sundowners, while the sunny afternoons offer opportunities to relax or embark on additional activities like hot air balloon safaris.

3. Fewer Crowds for a More Personal Experience

Although September falls at the tail end of the high tourist season, it marks a noticeable drop in the number of visitors. This means you’ll enjoy a more peaceful and intimate experience on safari. No need to worry about crowded safari vehicles or jostling for the perfect view at popular wildlife spots.

With fewer tourists in the park, you’ll have more freedom to explore the vast Serengeti plains at your own pace, enhancing your connection with the landscape and the wildlife. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet picnic under an acacia tree or watching a pride of lions, September offers a more authentic and tranquil safari experience.

4. Peak Predator Activity

September is also an ideal month for seeing predators in action. With the migration in full swing, predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas are at their most active. The high concentration of herbivores making their way across the plains creates prime hunting opportunities for these skilled predators.

Big cats, in particular, are often spotted during this time of year, making it a paradise for wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts. Don’t be surprised if you witness a lion pride stalking a herd of wildebeest or a cheetah launching into a high-speed chase across the savannah. These intense predator-prey interactions are a true highlight of any Serengeti safari in September.

5. Early Birdwatching Opportunities

While the Serengeti is famed for its “Big Five,” bird lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. September marks the beginning of bird migration season, which continues to ramp up in the following months. However, even in early September, you can spot plenty of unique bird species, some of which are arriving in the Serengeti from distant regions.

With over 500 bird species calling the Serengeti home, expect to see everything from colorful Lilac-breasted rollers to striking martial eagles. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just starting to appreciate the beauty of African birdlife, September offers great opportunities to spot both resident and migratory species.

6. Budget-Friendly Travel and Safari Packages

Another reason to visit the Serengeti in September? It’s easier on your wallet. As September transitions into the low season, many safari operators and lodges begin to offer discounted rates or special deals. This allows you to enjoy luxurious accommodations and high-quality safari experiences at a fraction of the peak-season cost.

For budget-conscious travelers, this is the perfect time to take advantage of promotions on safaris, whether you’re looking to stay in budget camps or indulge in a luxury tented experience. Not only will you save money, but with fewer crowds, you’re also more likely to get prime lodgings and personalized service.

7. Ideal Conditions for Photography

If you’re a photography enthusiast, September is the perfect time to visit the Serengeti. The clear, dry-season skies and optimal lighting conditions create the ideal backdrop for stunning wildlife photography.

With fewer tourists in the park, you’ll also have better chances of capturing uninterrupted wildlife moments, whether it’s a herd of elephants on the move or a cheetah surveying the landscape from a kopje. From the golden hour lighting in the early mornings to the magnificent sunsets at dusk, you’re sure to leave the Serengeti with a collection of breathtaking images.

8. Immerse Yourself in Maasai Culture

A visit to the Serengeti wouldn’t be complete without interacting with the Maasai people, one of Africa’s most famous tribes. September is an excellent time to visit a traditional Maasai village, where you can gain a deeper understanding of their culture, history, and customs.

Many safari packages include visits to Maasai villages, where you can experience traditional dance performances, learn about the Maasai’s connection to the land, and even join them in daily activities. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see how the Maasai have coexisted with wildlife for centuries, making your Serengeti adventure even more enriching.

Top Travel Tips for Your September Serengeti Safari

  • Pack in layers: Mornings and evenings can be chilly, so dress in layers that you can easily adjust as temperatures rise during the day.
  • Bring binoculars: While the wildlife in the Serengeti is abundant, binoculars will help you get a closer look, especially during the Great Migration river crossings.
  • Plan early: Although September is less crowded than the peak season, it’s still wise to book your accommodations and safari tours in advance to ensure you get your preferred options.
  • Stay hydrated: Safaris can be long and hot, so make sure to bring plenty of water and stay hydrated during your game drives.

Final Thoughts: Time to Pack Your Bags

If you’re after a safari that combines incredible wildlife, pleasant weather, and a bit of serenity, September is hands down the best time to visit the Serengeti. Whether it’s witnessing the final stages of the Great Migration, catching predators on the prowl, or simply soaking in the sweeping views of the Serengeti plains, September offers an experience that’s hard to beat.

So, what are you waiting for? September is just around the corner, and the Serengeti’s wildlife is calling. Don’t miss out on the adventure of a lifetime—start planning your Serengeti safari today!

We had an amazing time on safari We had an amazing time on safari with Explore Green African Safaris Campany, the Team was very knowledgeable and clearly very experienced. We saw a lot of amazing sights all thanks to him (as we only managed to spot pumbas instead of cats ourselves!) In particular he was very skilled at driving during the difficult wet conditions we had in the Serengeti. Asante sana, Explore Green African Safaris Team.
